The Solvay Police Department

Solvay Police Department has a rich tradition of providing law enforcement service to the citizens of the Village of Solvay; a history that spans over 100 years. In 2003 following an extensive audit conducted by New York State Department of Criminal Justice Services the Solvay Police Department was certified as a New York State Accredited Police agency.

Less than 20% of Police agencies in New York State achieve State Accreditation.

What is the NYS Law Enforcement Accreditation Program?

The NYS Law Enforcement Accreditation Program provides formal recognition that an agency meets or exceeds general expectations of quality in the field. The program has four principal goals:

  • To increase the effectiveness and efficiency of law enforcement agencies utilizing existing personnel, equipment and facilities to the extent possible;
  • To promote increased cooperation and coordination among law enforcement agencies and other agencies of the criminal justice system;
  • To ensure the appropriate training of law enforcement personnel; and
  • To promote public confidence in law enforcement.

About Solvay Police Department

 Solvay Police Department has a Police Chief, one Lt. three Sgts, one Detective, seven full time officers, five PT officers, and two civilian employees.  The Department is the primary law enforcement agency that patrols the 1.56 square miles or over twenty six miles of roadway that encompasses the Village. The department responds to approximately 8100 calls for service per year, calls range from quality of life concerns to serious felony complaints.


 The department has several trained criminal evidence technicians, five firearms instructor, five NYS certified police instructors, two bike patrol officers. All officers are required to attend forty plus hours of in service training per year, in addition to other professional developmental courses. The Chief is a New York State certified police instructor and holds the title of Master Instructor for New York State, in addition to possessing a Masters in Business Administration.


Officers are utilizing the latest in equipment to better help them perform their duties. Each officer carries a Glock 21,   .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun, and has the option of taking an 870 Remington 12 gauge shotgun on patrol.Officers also carry the Taser x26 stun gun. The patrol fleet includes one patrol vehicle equipped with License Plate Readers. Fleet vehicles are equipped with a mobile computer terminal, or MCT, and the latest in communication systems. The Department has two high tech, broad-band surveillance cameras that afford the Department 24/7 surveillance and recording capabilities. These cameras can be easily moved to any location within the Village, to assist the Department with a variety criminal complaints or quality of life concerns.


The Solvay Police Department is committed to providing a professional level of service that includes a commitment to customer service and attention to quality of life issues. We are continuously working with the citizens of the village on various community relations projects. Projects such as a neighborhood watch program that is currently a role model for communities in the area. The Department also supports an award winning police cadet program.
